You can see Step by step instructions and a video tutorial on how to crochet an adult bolero that is simple in construction. This bolero is crochet in 3 panels.
I’ll make size M. You can easily customize a bolero to your size.

You will need:

Yarn 250 g / 575 m / 630 yds
Ball (50g) contains 115 m / 126 yds
Hook Size 4 mm (US 6)

Terminology:

st – stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
DC – double crochet (yarn over the hook once)
V-st – DC + CH + DC in one stitch

Size: M

Width = 44 cm / 17.3 in
Length = 44 cm / 17.3 in

Instruction:

The number of chains for different sizes of bolero:

1/2 FRONT
S = 33 chains
M = 39 chains
L = 45 chains
XL = 51 chains
XXL = 57 chains

BACK
S = 66 chains
M = 78 chains
L = 90 chains
XL = 102 chains
XXL = 114 chains

Multiple of 3 for all sizes

1/2 FRONT

To begin, chain 39 or any multiple of 3
If you want, you can make more chains to make the bolero wider.

Row 1: skip chain and make one single crochet (SC) in each chain across. Total 38 SCs. Turn your work.
Row 2: CH 3; skip one st, V-st; *skip 2 sts, V-st *repeat entire row except for the last 2 stitches; skip one stitch and make DC in the last st.
Row 3: CH 3, DC 3 in the middle of every V-st, DC in the last st.
Row 4: CH 3; skip one st, V-st; *skip 2 sts, V-st *repeat entire row except for the last 2 stitches; skip one stitch and make DC in the last chain space.

Rows 3 – 4 = Pattern
Continue to repeat rows 3 and 4 in the same way, to be a total of 23 rows.
If you want, you can make more rows to make the bolero longer.

Row 24: slip stitch 7, CH 3, skip one st, V-st; *skip 2 sts, V-st *repeat entire row except for the last 2 stitches; skip one stitch and make DC in the last chain space.

Row 25: CH 3, DC 3 in the middle of every V-st, skip st and make DC
Row 26: skip st and make 2 slip stitches, CH 3, skip one st, V-st; *skip 2 sts, V-st *repeat entire row except for the last 2 stitches; skip one stitch and make DC in the last chain space
Continue repeat pattern, to be a total of 33 rows.

Make the second 1/2 front in the same way but as a mirror reflection.

BACK

Make 78 chains (multiple of 3)
If you want, you can make more chains to make the bolero wider.

Row 1: skip chain and make one single crochet (SC) in each chain across. Total 77 SCs.
Row 4: CH 3; skip one st, V-st; *skip 2 sts, V-st *repeat entire row except for the last 2 stitches; skip one stitch and make DC in the last st.

Rows 3 – 4 = Pattern

Continue to repeat rows 3 and 4 in the same way, to be a total of 33 rows.

When you finished 3 panels, use your yarn and sew two pieces together at the shoulder.

Measure 22 cm / 8.5 inches from the top of the shoulders and put the stitch marker. That will mark an opening for the arm.
Use your yarn and sew two pieces together.

Edge – bottom:
Rows 1 – 3: single crochet stitches

Edge – around the bolero:
Row 1: single crochet stitches (one row / 2 SCs)
Rows 2- 3: single crochet stitches

Edge – armhole:
Row 1: single crochet stitches (one row / 2 SCs)
Rows 2- 3: single crochet stitches
