423 – Crochet Easy Granny Square Pattern

You can see step-by-step instructions and a video tutorial on how to crochet a beautiful granny square pattern with several colors of yarn. You can use this pattern for a baby blanket, vest, sweater, and many other things. Easy to make.

You will need:

You can use any yarn and hook you have or love.

Terminology:

st – stitch
sl.st – slip stitch
Rnd / Row – round/row
CH – chain stitch
DC – double crochet stitch (yarn over the hook once)
Shell = DC3 + CH 3 + DC3 in one space (It’s a corner)

Instructions:

Start 4 chains in a circle.
Slip stitch to that first chain just to close the round.

Rnd 1:

CH 3, DC 2, CH 3, DC 3, CH 3, DC 3, CH 3, DC 3, CH 2
Slip stitch to that first st just to close the round.
Make sl.st. in the next 2 stitches.
Switch to another-colored yarn.
Make sl.st in the chains space.

Rnd 2:

CH 3 + DC 2 + CH 3 + DC 3 in the chains space. This is the first corner.
Shell in the next chain space (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3) This is the second corner.
Shell in the next chain space (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3) This is the third corner.
Shell in the next chain space (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3) This is the fourth corner.
Slip stitch to that first st just to close the round.
Make sl.st. in the next 2 stitches.
Switch to another-colored yarn.
Make sl.st in the chains space.

Rnd 3:

CH 3 + DC 2 + CH 3 + DC 3 in the first corner
DC 3 in the next space
Shell in the second corner (DC3 + CH 3 + DC 3)
DC 3 in the next space
Shell in the third corner (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3)
DC 3 in the next space
Shell in the fourth corner (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3)
DC 3 in the next space
Slip stitch to that first st just to close the round.
Make sl.st. in the next 2 stitches.
Switch to another-colored yarn.
Make sl.st in the chains space.

Rnd 4:

CH 3 + DC 2 + CH 3 + DC 3 in the first corner
DC 3 in the next 2 spaces,
Shell in the second corner (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3)
DC 3 in the next 2 spaces,
Shell in the third corner (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3)
DC 3 in the next 2 spaces,
Shell in the fourth corner (DC 3 + CH 3 + DC 3)
DC 3 in the next 2 spaces,
Slip stitch to that first st just to close the round.
Make sl.st. in the next 2 stitches.
Switch to another-colored yarn.
Make sl.st in the chains space.

Repeat this process in the same way to get the desired number of rows. Combine yarn colors as you wish.
