300 – How to Crochet Vest Top | Shell Stitch Pattern

You will need:

I used 6 balls of yarn (300 g / 600 m / 654 yds)
Ball Weight: 50g (medium)
Yarn Length: 100 m (109 yds)
Hook Size 5 mm (US 8)

Terminology:
st – Stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet stitch
HDC – half double crochet stitch
DC – double crochet stitch (yarn over the hook once)
DC3Shell – DC 3 all into the same stitch

Size: L
Width = 51 cm / 20 in Length = 51 cm / 20 in

Instructions:

The number of chains for different sizes of vests:
Back
S = 66 chains
M = 72 chains
L = 78 chains
XL = 90 chains
XXL = 102 chains
½ Front
S = 30 chains
M = 36 chains
L = 42 chains
XL = 48 chains
XXL = 54 chains

Multiple of 6 for all sizes

1/2 Front

Make 42 chains (multiple of 6)

Row 1: skip chain (CH) and make a single crochet stitch (SC) in the next 41 chains. Total 41 SCs.
Row 2: CH one and make half double crochet stitch (HDC) to the end row. Total 41 HDCs.
Row 3: CH one, HDC in the first st, HDC in the back loops except for the last stitch; HDC in the last stitch. Total 41 HDCs.
Row 4: CH 3, DC in the next 3 sts, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st, *DC 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st *repeat entire row except for the last 4 sts, DC in the last 4 sts. Turn your work.

Row 5: CH 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st, *DC 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st *repeat entire row except for the last st, DC in the last st. Turn your work.

Row 6: CH 3, DC in the next 3 sts, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st, *DC 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st *repeat entire row except for the last 4 sts, DC in the last 4 sts. Turn your work.

Pattern = Row 5 – 6

Rows 7 – 13: repeat pattern

Rows 14 – 31: decrease one stitch from the same side in each row

Rows 32 – 36: without decrease stitches (total 23 sts)

Make the second 1/2 front in the same way but as a mirror reflection

Back

Make 78 chains (multiple of 6)

Row 1: skip chain (CH) and make a single crochet stitch (SC) in the next 41 chains. Total 41 SCs.
Row 2: CH one and make half double crochet stitch (HDC) to the end row. Total 41 HDCs.
Row 3: CH one, HDC in the first st, HDC in the back loops except for the last stitch; HDC in the last stitch. Total 41 HDCs.
Row 4: CH 3, DC in the next 3 sts, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st, *DC 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st *repeat entire row except for the last 4 sts, DC in the last 4 sts. Turn your work.

Row 5: CH 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st, *DC 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st *repeat entire row except for the last st, DC in the last st. Turn your work.

Row 6: CH 3, DC in the next 3 sts, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st, *DC 3, skip st, DC3Shell, skip st *repeat entire row except for the last 4 sts, DC in the last 4 sts. Turn your work.

Pattern = Row 5 – 6
keep repeating the pattern
Rows 7 – 36: repeat pattern

Use your yarn and sew two pieces together at the shoulder.

Measure 20 cm / 8 inches from the top of the shoulders and put the stitch marker. That will mark an opening for the arm.

Edge – armhole: 
First row: single crochet stitches entire row (one row / 2 SCs); join with a slip stitch
Second row: CH, SC 3, *CH 3, SC 3 *repeat entire row; join with a slip stitch

Edge – around the vest:
Rows 1 – 2: single crochet stitches
Row 3: CH, SC 3, *CH 3, SC 3 *repeat entire row

Crochet button
4 chains in a circle (join with a slip stitch)
Rnd 1: CH one; HDC 10 into the center of the ring; join with a slip stitch
