337 – Crochet Short Cardigan Tutorial – How to Crochet a Sweater with Sleeves

You can see Step by step instructions and a video tutorial on how to crochet a crop sleeves cardigan.
This easy crochet cardigan is very cozy and comfy to wear. This sweater is crocheted in 5 panels – 2 fronts, back, and 2 sleeves and uses 4 different stitches throughout the entire pattern – single crochet, double crochet, single crochet back loop only, and Shell stitches!

You will need:

Cotton Yarn 500 g / 1150 m / 1250 yds (Weight #3)
Ball (50g) contains 115 m/ 125 yds
Hook Size 3.5 mm (US 4)
Hook Size 4 mm (US 6)

Size: M

Width: 47 cm / 18.5 in
Length: 47 cm / 18.5 in

Terminology:

st – stitch
sts – stitches
CH – chain
SC – single crochet
SCBLO – single crochet back loop only
DC – double crochet
DC5Shell – DC 5 all into the same stitch

Instructions:

First, I’m going to make piece one (FRONT 1/2)
Edge of the FRONT 1/2 (Ribbed pattern)
Hook Size 3.5 mm (US 4)
To begin make 11 chains.
Row 1: skip chain and make SC in every chain across. Total 10 SCs.
Row 2: CH and turn; make SC in the back loop only (SCBLO) in every stitch across; Total 10 SCs
Row 3: CH and turn; make SCBLO in every stitch across; Total 10 SCs
Rows 2 – 3: Pattern
Continue repeat pattern, to be a total of 37 rows (multiple of 6 plus 1)

Rows 37 = 19 cm / 7.4 in
If you need a different size, make more or fewer rows.

Different sizes – Edge of the FRONT 1/2 (Ribbed pattern):
S = 31 rows
M = 37 rows
L = 43 rows
XL = 49 rows
XXL = 55 rows
Multiple of 6 + 1 for all sizes

We have 37 rows = 37 stitches (multiple of 6 + 1)
One row one stitch.
Now, we’re going to crochet the body of the sweater (FRONT ½).
Hook Size 4 mm (US 6)
Row 1: CH 3 and make two double crochet stitches (DC) in the first st (row), skip 2 sts (rows), DC, *skip 2 sts (rows), DC5Shell, skip 2 sts (rows), DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts (rows), DC 3 in the last st (row).
Row 2: CH 3 and turn, skip 2 sts, *DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process
Row 3: CH 3 and turn, DC 2 in the first stitch, skip 2 sts, DC, *skip 2 st, DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC 3 in the last stitch.
Pattern = Rows 2 – 3
Continue repeat pattern, to be a total of 32 rows.

Width: 20 cm / 8 in
Length: 47 cm / 18.5 in

If you want, you can make more rows to make the sweater longer.

BACK side

Edge of the BACK side (Ribbed pattern – Rows 85)
Hook Size 3.5 mm (US 4)
To begin make 11 chains.
Row 1: skip chain and make SC in every chain across. Total 10 SCs.
Row 2: CH and turn; make SC in the back loop only (SCBLO) in every stitch across; Total 10 SCs
Row 3: CH and turn; make SCBLO in every stitch across; Total 10 SCs

Continue repeat pattern, to be a total of 85 rows (multiple of 6 plus 1)

Rows 85 = 44 cm / 17.3 in
If you need a different size, make more or fewer rows.

Different sizes – Edge of the BACK side (Ribbed pattern):

S = 73 rows
M = 85 rows
L = 97 rows
XL = 109 rows
XXL = 121 rows
Multiple of 6 + 1 for all sizes

We have 85 rows = 85 stitches (multiple of 6 + 1)
One row one stitch.
Now, we’re going to crochet the body of the sweater (BACK side).
Hook Size 4 mm (US 6)

Row 1: CH 3 and make two double crochet stitches (DC) in the first st (row), skip 2 sts (rows), DC, *skip 2 sts (rows), DC5Shell, skip 2 sts (rows), DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts (rows), DC 3 in the last st (row).
Row 2: CH 3 and turn, skip 2 sts, *DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process
Row 3: CH 3 and turn, DC 2 in the first stitch, skip 2 sts, DC, *skip 2 st, DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC 3 in the last stitch.
Pattern = Rows 2 – 3
Continue repeat pattern, to be a total of 30 rows.
If you want, you can make more rows to make the sweater longer.

Count 37 stitches from the end of the row and put the stitch marker. Repeat this for the other side.
Make two more rows on both sides. There will be 11 loops left in between.
Total rows 32.

Use yarn and sew the back and front on the shoulders.

SLEEVES

Edge of the Sleeve (Ribbed pattern)
Hook Size 3.5 mm (US 4)
To begin make 11 chains.
Row 1: skip chain and make SC in every chain across. Total 10 SCs.
Row 2: CH and turn; make SC in the back loop only (SCBLO) in every stitch across; Total 10 SCs
Row 3: CH and turn; make SCBLO in every stitch across; Total 10 SCs

Continue repeat pattern, to be a total of 37 rows (multiple of 6 plus 1)

Rows 37 = 19 cm / 7.4 in
We have 37 rows = 37 stitches
Now, we’re going to crochet the body of the Sleeve

Row 1: In this row, we will add 18 loops more.
CH and make SC 2 in the first stitch; *SC, SC 2 in one st *repeat this process. Total 55 SC sts.
Hook Size 4 mm (US 6)
Row 2: CH 3 and make two double crochet stitches (DC) in the first st (row), skip 2 sts (rows), DC, *skip 2 sts (rows), DC5Shell, skip 2 sts (rows), DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts (rows), DC 3 in the last st (row).
Row 3: CH 3 and turn, skip 2 sts, *DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process
Row 4: CH 3 and turn, DC 2 in the first stitch, skip 2 sts, DC, *skip 2 st, DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC 3 in the last stitch.
Pattern = Rows 3 – 4
Continue repeat pattern, to be a total of 23 rows.

Length: 32 cm / 12.6 in

Row 24: In this row add one more stitch on each side.
CH 3 and turn, DC 3 in the first stitch, skip 2 sts, DC, *skip 2 st, DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC 4 in the last stitch.
Row 25: CH 3 and turn, DC in the next st, skip 2 sts, *DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC in the last two sts.
Row 26: In this row add one more stitch on each side.
CH 3 and turn, DC 3 in the first stitch, DC in the second st, skip 2 sts, DC, *skip 2 st, DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC in the next st, DC 4 in the last stitch.
Row 27: CH 3 and turn, DC in the next 2 sts, skip 2 sts, *DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC in the last 3 sts.
Row 28: In this row add one more stitch on each side.
CH 3 and turn, DC 3 in the first stitch, DC in the next 2 sts, skip 2 sts, DC, *skip 2 st, DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC in the next 2 sts, DC 4 in the last stitch.
Row 29: CH 3 and turn, DC in the next 3 sts, skip 2 sts, *DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC in the last 4 sts.
Row 30: CH 3 and turn, DC 2 in the first stitch, DC in the next 3 sts, skip 2 sts, DC, *skip 2 st, DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC in the next 3 sts, DC 3 in the last stitch.
Row 31: CH 3 and turn, DC in the next 3 sts, skip 2 sts, *DC5Shell, skip 2 sts, DC *repeat this process; skip 2 sts, DC in the last 4 sts.
Row 32: as Row 30
Row 33: as Row 31

Length = 48 cm / 19 in

If you want, you can make more rows to make the sleeve longer.
Make another sleeve like this.

Use your yarn and sew sleeves, front and back pieces.

Edge – around the sweater

Hook Size 3.5 mm (US 4)

Row 1: chain one and make single crochet stitches (one row / 2 SCs)

Ribbed pattern
Make 8 chains;
Row 1: skip CH and make SC in every chain across. Total 7 SCs. Slip stitch in the next two st. Turn.
Row 2: skip 2 slip stitches and make SCBLO in every stitch across; Total 7 sts
Row 3: CH and turn; make SCBLO in every stitch across; Slip stitch in the next two st. Turn.

Continue repeat Rows 2 – 3 around the sweater.

If you wish, make a buttonhole.
